• The Washington International Education Council, founded in 2001, organizes the annual Washington International Education Conference (WIEC.) The Conference is the only event offering independent objective information to the international education community. Hundreds of representatives from universities, language programs, embassies and nongovernmental organizations have benefited from the information provided at the Conference and the important networking opportunities that are included at each WIEC.

The WIEC is the premier event bringing together Education and Cultural Attachés from Washington-based Embassies, sponsoring organizations, NGOs, universities, boarding schools, and language program representatives, along with representatives from the Departments of State, Commerce and Homeland Security.

The WIEC is the only event that takes international education officers to the most significant embassies and sponsoring organizations that are responsible for the largest numbers of international students in the United States. We are grateful to the Embassies of Bahrain, Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Kuwait, Libya, Malaysia, Oman, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden and the United Arab Emirates that have hosted the Conference participants and provided informative presentations.

The latest information on the sources of international students and the trends in students coming to this country are provided to Conference participants. Each year the Conference features sessions delivered by experts in the field of international education. The Conference provides the diplomatic community with information on the extensive variety of programs available in the United States, along with the latest information on visa issuance and regulations governing international students in the United States. The two Conference luncheons and the Conference reception provide unique networking opportunities.

The WIEC officers have a combined total of more than 100 years of experience in the field of international education with on the ground experience in more than 60 countries. WIEC officers have worked with students from 125 countries.

The Washington International Education Conference recognizes the vital role international educational exchange plays in the world today. As our world grows smaller with greater interdependence between nations, it is more important than ever to establish linkages between people from different regions regardless of cultural differences. The Washington International Education Council is dedicated to building new bridges of understanding and fostering existing relationships while helping international students reach the highest levels of academic excellence.
